12 Things that Make R Happy

I was with my favorite client today and like our other meetings, the last 30 minutes ended up catching up on our lives.  Today the topic was centered around recently read books.  My client mentioned "The Happiness Project" which is written by a woman who has "first world problems" and centers each month around one thing that makes her happy.  It got me to thinking - I'd like to focus on 12 things that make me happy.

To me - being happy is completely relaxed without a worry in that moment.  I know living without worries is unrealistic, but for me these small moments of happiness make my day brighter and bring an overall sense of relaxation.

12.  Steam room:   There is nothing more I love after a workout (or even without a workout) than camping out in the steam room - no phone, no clock, complete silence.  And it makes me skin glow :)

11.  A good glass of wine:  Need I say more?  There is nothing that brings a smile to my face and pure relaxation than the first sniff of an amazing glass of wine.  Wines that have a sentimental value to them bring an extra warmness to me :)

10.  Pajamas:  elastic waistbands in pants or FLOOFY chemises - both are good with me.

9.  Having my hair washed by someone else.

8.  Laughing with friends - that good belly, fat man laugh - the kind that moms teach you not to do because its unladylike.

7.  A good homecooked meal - whether its by my mom, hubby, me, friends, in-laws - doesn't matter.

6.  Dance parties - this one is so fun, because you can be sober dancing in the mirror as you are getting ready, in a u-jam class, or enjoying a few drinks with friends dancing :)

5.  Champagne always makes me happy.  Especially champagne til 2:00 am on a school night giggling at the same jokes for the past 20 years....

4.  Ice cream cones - even though I can't eat them in "normal" places, nothing makes me happier than seeing an ice cream cone.

3.  Baby clothes - so many good friends are pregnant or have small children so I've become a regular in the baby departments - how cute are these little people clothing!

2.  Beach - the smell, the sound, the feel of the sand - its all amazing.

1.  G$ - well, he read this and requested to make it on the list ;)

What I love most is sharing most of these things with good friends and family - they make these happy moments even better :)

What makes you happy?

R's Top 5 Must Haves for Summer Skin

So, with summer comes baring your legs, arms and minimizing the foundation.  So with that said, I've found some new staples (all under $30) for my summer skin care:

1.  Olive Body Scrub from the Body Shop.  I can't say enough about this product.  I use it once a week on Monday morning, leave it on for a few minutes and then wash it off.  I can feel my skin feel fresh and moisturized without that icky residue.  It is also a very mild scent which I adore.  I will be posting a comparison blog with another scrub.

2.  Schick Quattro Trim Style.  So I used the Venus rake product last year, and this year found this at Target.  It has three different comb lengths and then the option to take the comb off completely - based on your hairstyle ;).  I read that the trimmer lasts up to a couple of years - amazing!  Even if it doesn't, it's quite a steal at $11, and is a trimmer and razor in one!  The Venus rake product was a separate rake and razor, and is pricier than its $11 competitor.

3.  City Block Sheer Sunscreen SPF 25.  This is a steal at $21!  I love this product because not only does it work well as a sunscreen, I use it as a primer as well.  On Saturday/Sunday afternoons where I need some coverage, I will wear the sunscreen (to protect my face) along with some powder, mascara and a hint of bronzer - voila - I look as natural as one can be without a zit showing :)

4.  Nars Orgasm Blush.  This is another must have, regardless of season.  During summer, I especially love the natural glow this product provides with any level of tan.  The product is practically smudge proof - I've worn it on 18 hour travel days, gym sessions - it literally keeps a great glow, but comes off with my makeup remover.

5.  MAC Lip Conditioner:  LOVE LOVE LOVE.  This product is better than Carmex, which is blasphemy!  This product isn't sticky, virtually has no smell and keeps lips moisturized for hours on end...love love love.  go buy this!

Bonus:  MAC Fix+ Spray:  This is great, especially in the summer.  I recommend spraying it when you have minimal eye makeup on.  I do love how it feels, especially on my face on a hot day.  I have been known to put this in the fridge on a hot day :)  I also LOVE having this when I get off of a long plane ride.

There's obviously products that aren't included, but I wanted to keep this affordable and easy to find :)

R's Favorite Traditions

Growing up in an Indian family didn't always mean you have family traditions or get to start new ones.  With Indian culture having so many traditions of its own, there's rarely time to start or implement a new one.  So when G$ and I started our family, it meant the world to us (fine, me) to have our traditions.  So, here I will share some with you.

1.  Anniversary Dinner:  We did steal this one from Gravy Train and Xtian.  For our wedding anniversary (year after year), we always go to The Basin for dinner.  We do love it there, especially their truffle fries.  This restaurant is dark with an intimate ambiance, great service and fantastic food.  YUM!

2.  Anniversary Wine:  Along with our anniversary, G$ and I decided to always drink a bottle of 2008 wine.  I forgot where we picked this tradition up, but we were lucky to start at our first anniversary.

3.  Friendsgiving.  This is my favorite tradition that we're able to celebrate with our friends.  3 years ago, a group of us decided to start a Wednesday night friendsgiving done potluck style with different themes (so you don't overdose on turkey two days in a row) and lots of wine.  The first year we hosted, we did a Chinese theme, made Spicy Green Beans and pork when we'd already had too much wine and broke each of our wine glasses doing our "Thankful" toasts.  Last year, we had learned and prepared food beforehand and used old winery glasses in the event anyone was too happy :)  This year, N will be joining us and we are doing a Mexican theme.  This is also the first one I'm not hosting.

These are my top three favorite self started traditions, what are some of yours?

Things I Love - For the Home

I've loved decorating for as long as I can remember.  I've always wanted to be able to paint my walls various colors and hang things on them. Unfortunately, my parents didn't like holes in the wall and my landlords didn't care for paint.

When G$ and I moved into our Condo o' Love, we had the opportunity to truly redo the entire place - which was SO awesome...except of course, it had to be a compromise of boy tastes meets girl tastes.  Luckily for him, I like modern decor and that made it easier to find things he could live with.

Here are some things I love:

I'm starting to love gray and yellow together, especially for a bedroom

I love the three mirrors.  This would be perfect in a guest bath over a pedestal sink.

I LOVE islands in the kitchen. My family and I spend most of our time around our's. I especially love the shelves at the end of this island.

I want to spend a warm afternoon here with a magazine and a cold class of sauv blanc.

Organized areas make me very happy.

Why I'm Excited for N to be in the Bay Area

When I tell people that N is moving to the Bay Area, they respond with "OMG - that's like a dream come true for you!  How excited are you!"  This is all people:  close friends (like Coop and Duh), new friends that I met last weekend, and people I barely know.  WOW - leads me to believe one thing "I talk about N waaaaaaaaay too much!"

But that said, it really makes me happy to see how excited others are for her to move out here and how excited they are for me :)  So I've put together some specific reasons I'm happy for N to be here:

10.  Weekly Wednesday date nights where we try new recipes that we've logged on a Google Spreadsheet (are you surprised?) and times when one of us will throw a pot on for the other, like our college days.

9.  Having a place that I know I can go to when G$ is being a brat (b/c I'm rarely one) or is watching insane amounts of sports

8.  Saving 35 cents in shipping a birthday card across the country, and simply being able to hand it over on the ACTUAL day with a cupcake

7.  Not having to binge drink when N's visiting with every bottle of wine I've saved to open with her.  Now we will just binge drink on our weekly dates ;)

6.  Having someone encourage me to return all the things I buy online and don't like when they arrive.  I kid you not, because of not returning online purchases, I probably have over $1000 worth of stuff I'll never use (that doesnt' include the 10 pairs of shoes I bought for my wedding and didn't wear)

5.  Back to feeling tall in comparison.  But N will go back to feeling not like a klutz.

4.  Being able to see outfits in person, rather than the sketchy iPhone/Droid pics we send back and forth, and are forever in our SMS history.

3.  Being able to have a capri collection, courtesy of N's pants that are "normal" legnth on her. That goes along with doubling my collection of accessories, handbags, clutches, etc. If only I could squeeze my feet into her shoes...

2.  Since we are both product whores, we tend to buy different things and then when we visit its like going into a store and trying ALL new things.  Now I won't have to go 6 months (and $400) later to try new products!

1.  Having a my best friend, who is also southern avocado head, less than a mile away from work to meet me at Target.

Finally Spring/Summer in the Bay Area

Don't let the myth of sunny California fool you.  We've had the wettest winter yet - lots of rain and gray clouds.  Luckily, that means all the streams on my favorite hiking trails are running at full speed ahead - which is exciting, but I still hate the rain.

So - the sun is FINALLY shining bright and the weather forecast consistently reports temperatures in the high 70's / low 80's down in my area (which explains why I chose to live down there).

So now that it's shining, I'll share the top 4 things that bring are associated with spring/summer and bring a smile to my face:
Who can resist pretty strargazer lilies?
Mezze Platter on a Warm Summer Day
Kors Michael Kors Wedge Sandals

Denim Shift Dress from Gap

What makes you happiest about warm weather?

Things I Love About This Time of Year

This time of year is always exciting and blah at the same time.  The blah things being:  constant rain, rain puddles, cold wind, and having to brace myself for the wind/cold temperatures.

But the silver lining on this time of year are the following things I love:

1.  Starbucks Red Cups!  I think I spend more money at Starbucks between October - December than any other time of year.  If only the Passion Fruit Iced Tea came in a red cup :)  The only vent here is : please bring back sugarfree Christmas drinks!

2.  Wrappy Cozy Cardigans!  I love wearing these on top of t-shirts, tank tops, anything actually!  I can't think of a better way to stay warm and feel cozy than one of these.  Strongly suggest getting yourself one for this season!

3.  Reasons to gather with friends over yummy wine and food.  Be prepared to see a full debrief about our pre-game Thanksgiving!

4.  Staying in on the couch with a full movie marathon during a rainy storm.

5.  Christmas lights!  Nothing makes me happier than seeing houses all lit up with Christmas decorations (the tackier the better)!  There's a house in the town that N and I are from that does Snoopy decorations every year - so excited to see that soon!

Top 5 Things I Need to Get Ready

We all have them...those few items we MUST have when getting ready - whether its a big night on the town, a lunch with the girls, a shopping excursion, or a nice dinner on the beach when on vacation.

Here are the top 5 things I can't live without and why:

5.  MUSIC!  From the days of getting ready to go to frat parties in college to trying to make myself look like a normal person for work, music blaring from our iPod speakers is a MUST!  From boy band pop, to the AWESOME britney spears, to hip hop - who cares, its F-A-B-O-L-O-U-S.  Holla Back.

4.  Black Eyeliner.  I feel like black eyeliner makes my eyes pop and look more awake.

2.  Dior Foundation in 50.  This stuff is AWESOME.  Its not too thick, but too sheer where it shows the insecurities most of us have with our skin.  Its a lightweight foundation that I put on with a brush, and it stays ALL day. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

3.  Rusk Wired.  Whether I need my hair straight (for anytime I'm not on vacation), I put a small dime sized amount thru my hair and then blow dry / flat iron straight.  This product is AWESOME and does get your hair straight.  Now when I'm on vacation, I run this product thru my hair while its wet and spray a salt spray, and then my hair relaxes into its natural waves and has a great beach look one can only obtain while on vacation.

1.  Awesome smelling, moisturing lotion.  My top three are:  Nivea, J&J Baby Lotion (yes the one in the pink bottle), and Amazing Grace.  The scents are soft enough to wear and not seem like you're THAT person who overpowers the room with her scent.  They moisturize SO well, whether you're in a dry winter climate, or after a full day of ocean/pool.

Those are mine, post yours!

5 Reasons I Heart Spring

The top 5 reasons I heart when its spring!!!  I'll keep warm weather out of this list, since its obvi a given.

5.  Peep toe shoes where you can show off your latest pedicure

4.  Sitting outside with a yummy margarita or white wine.  Or sitting outside after dinner with a glass of wine and a fire in the firepit table.

3.  Wearing fun colored dresses to work

2.  The good mood I seem to be in ALL THE TIME!

1.  Weekend adventures.  Now that its warmer outside, there can be more Sunday Fundays, where we can explore parks / have picnics / go wine tasting / etc.

New Mascara I Tried

So, I am notorious for trying thousands of random beauty products (especially the sparkly ones), and up until today, I was in LOVE with the Dior Blackout Mascara:

But this morning, I randomly tried a sample of a Clinique mascara that I received as part of a gift and I must say...i LOVED it. The brush had a comb to truly separate your lashes (mine like to stick together).

If you're in the market for a new masacara, I love both of these and will probably keep both of these (in different colors) in my makeup bag to use based on my mood :)

Happy Friday!
